Winter Sturgeon Fishing Charter with Yves Bisson

I need to start by saying that I don’t know of any better sturgeon fishing guides than Yves Bisson.  His knowledge, friendliness, and commitment to conservation of this fish is second to none.

I have been fishing with Yves 5 times now.  I have fished with other Sturgeon Guides in Vancouver, but it was a completely different experience.

This trip I went with my brother and his two sons. It was a good opportunity to hang out with family.  It didn’t take long to catch our first fish.  Less than 10 minutes to be exact. And we weren’t fishing for the small fish either.  30 minutes later, we had a 6ft 7inch sturgeon and a 8ft 8inch 300lb sturgeon at the boat.  Quite the start to the day.

Our location of choice was somewhere upstream in a non-descript area of the Fraser.  I’d have no clue that’s where the sturgeon were hiding.  And I’m sure many guides don’t even know of this spot. But when you fish the same river and the same fish between 200 & 250 days a year, you get to know where the fish are and what they are biting (or if they are even biting).  Yves said that the number of sturgeon in an area doesn’t necessarily correlate with the number of fish you’d expect to catch.  And he proved that point.  We caught 6 of our 9 sturgeon in this location, despite very few fish showing on the depth sounder.

Yves is a tremendous wealth of knowledge on sturgeon and is always offering to share his passion with us. Throughout the day, we learned a lot about growth rates, how they take the different baits and the conservation program Yves is a member of.

There was very little time between fish.  In total we caught 9 sturgeon. 8 sturgeon we caught were over 5 feet and 2 were over 8 feet! 

If you like fishing and want to catch the largest freshwater fish in the world, you need to go sturgeon fishing. And you need to fish with Yves Bisson. You won’t be disappointed.  With nearly 20 years in the industry and nearly 25,000 sturgeon caught, you can’t go wrong!
