Best Sturgeon Fishing on the Fraser River
I grew up fishing on Vancouver Island. Mainly we did salmon fishing and trout fishing. Fishing was my form of relaxation. We’d go camping and I would fish for hours every day. I knew every stump, every shallow spot and every hole where we needed to get ready for the bite.
It wasn’t until I moved to Vancouver when I tried sturgeon fishing. I knew roughly what a sturgeon was, but had no idea that it was the largest freshwater fish in the world. And I didn’t realize that the biggest sturgeon are in the Fraser River – my back yard. People come from all over the world to fish for the Great White Sturgeon. It’s a bucket-list fish for sure.
I first started fishing for sturgeon with a group of hockey buddies. What an initial experience! I thought a 4 foot sturgeon was big. Others in our group caught 6ft+ sturgeon.
My second time sturgeon fishing on the Fraser was with my 2 brothers and my dad. Not the best guide, and the fishing was mediocre. The waders we used leaked, leaving me with a wet right foot for the majority of our fishing trip.
Then I went fishing with Yves Bisson. What a different experience. The knowledge Yves has about the sturgeon and the Fraser River are unmatched. I can’t count the number of white sturgeon over 6ft that I’ve caught with Yves Bisson, Sturgeon Fishing Guide extraordinaire! Every time we seem to catch at least one 7 or 8 ft sturgeon. All his gear is new and top of the line. No leaky waders!
If you like fishing and want to experience winding in a fish that weighs more than you do, then I’d recommend fishing for the Great White Sturgeon in the Fraser. And if you can manage to snag a time when Yves is available, then jump at the opportunity! Yves is definitely the Best Sturgeon Fishing Guide out there!
